i forgot to mention the bombardment of visitors in the past few weeks. p eug, baik, dlim, isabel, roy, andy, ester. a couple of highlights from the last group:
-roy explaining something to eshee and her response "is this gonna give me cancer?"
-ester explaining how coats/jackets are an investment and calling me and andy "shopping chumps"
-andy sharing his sauna experience
-jane telling roy & andy to pick up their balls, sack it up and stop acting like pansies
-roy whining to go back to my apt and watch youtube videos
i had former georgetown coach craig esherick as a guest speaker in class today. he was the 11th best damn sports blowups. i think he got #3 on espn's list: http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/5721058

i would contemplate paying bill simmons to be my friend. hes THAT cool.
"Which brings me back to my original point: We're overthinking this whole fantasy football thing. It has evolved into a billion-dollar industry, a convoluted excuse to waste time and keep in touch with friends, one of those rare hobbies that balances competitiveness, male bonding and trash talking in the best ways possible. We kill ourselves trying to outsmart one another, and there isn't a single moment on Sundays and Mondays when we're not monitoring dozens of guys at once. But there are two hard-core realities that can't be ignored:
Reality A: There's either a 9-in-10 chance or an 11-in-12 chance that you're going to lose your league, depending how deep it is.
Reality B: Thanks to platoons, free-agent movement, injuries, unpredictable rookies, bad luck and everything else, fantasy football has turned into a freaking crapshoot.
Nowadays, anyone has a chance. Take my buddy Camp, the original commissioner of my East Coast League before he got married, had a couple of kids and stepped down. OK, we fired him for negligence. Now he's one of Those Guys in our league -- the guy who starts players during their bye weeks, waits four weeks to waive someone who's out for the year and offers crazy trades like "Wes Welker for Laurence Maroney." He's also one of the funniest owners (the master of inappropriate mom/sister jokes); he laughs at everyone else's jokes on the annual conference call; his team name is high comedy (a college joke I can't print), and his teams have the bizarre ability to remain annually competitive even though he's two to three guys short every week. The pluses always outweigh the minuses with Camper, even after you get bounced from the final playoff spot because he accidentally started a running back with a blown ACL against the guy who ended up beating you out."
"Random note No. 2: Colston being available at tight end in Yahoo/ESPN.com fantasy leagues might be the all-time fantasy glitch to end all fantasy glitches. It's like being able to use Travis Hafner at catcher. This has been the biggest story of the 2006 season that nobody covered -- they should have been leading "SportsCenter" with it."
"Disgruntled San Diego fan Dominic wonders, "Can you think of any analogies where the Martyball concept can be applied outside of football? What about folding a $500 pot when you're $5 from all-in because you're afraid someone will get you on the river? Working the machine for a walk in a batting cage? Five-hitting your way to a 19, then surrendering because the dealer is showing a face card? Landing a three-way with the Olsen twins, only to have them walk out because you fell asleep halfway through?"
always quote ;)

bill simmons, i wish i could be his friend:
Q: You know that friend everyone has in college who gets embarrassingly drunk every time you go out, then declares he'll never do it again ... and then does? USA Basketball is that drunk friend.
--Josh, Baton Rouge, La.
SG: Sorry, I'm not getting wound up about FIBA anymore. The rules are too different from the NBA's. It's like sending USA baseball players to a tournament with two-foot-high mounds, neck-to-ankles strike zones and outfield walls 500 feet from home plate. You can't expect a team of randomly assembled All-Stars to come together in three weeks and succeed in a format in which they're the only ones unfamiliar with the rules. It's stupid. Any kind of basketball that makes Jose Calderon more valuable than LeBron James or Dwyane Wade is, by any calculation, idiotic. We should send the AND1 All-Stars to the 2008 Olympics in protest.
Q: When are we going to see the Little League World Series of Poker?
--David P., Philadelphia
SG: You, sir, are a genius. I would watch this every night. The unparalleled tension of the spelling bee crossed with the unabashed exploitation of the Little League World Series. I'm making this my signature series when they put me in charge of ESPN6.
3. Cincinnati, 3-0Now here's an intriguing team. They can run the ball, throw the ball, stop the run, create turnovers and make plays on special teams. They're a five-tool team. So what can't they do? Other than stay out of trouble? Anyway, if the Patriots don't have what it takes this winter for a fourth Super Bowl appearance, I'm pulling hard for Cincy to make it to Miami. And why? Because the Bengals would be out in Miami for two weeks!!!! Hide the women, hide the children, hide the Maxim models ... here come the Bengals! That would be the single greatest week in ESPN history. ESPN should station Ed Werder and Shelley Smith 24/7 outside the Miami Dade County courthouse right now just to be safe. Seriously, what would feature more arrests, Super Bowl week with the Bengals or Season 1 of "Miami Vice?" I'm 18 levels beyond giddy about this.

this period of graduations has reminded me of my own graduation. not the actual ceremony but the whole process of what it takes to receive a bachelors degree. and again i ask myself the same question "how the heck did i graduate?" at times i put in the absolute minimum amount of time and effort required. that part makes sense. but at other times i definitely did far less than the absolute minimum and got away with it somehow (except in soc 127c). danny yoon is witness to one example: anthro 98, the online gaming decal. i literally tried to fail that class but i still passed. wtf?
i dunno what i wouldve done w/out the internet. ive mastered the art of using quotes. i look back at some of the papers on my computer and think "what a work of art" because 95% of it werent my ideas but it still wasnt plagarism. but when i look at some of the other papers i think "omg, what merciful readers" because they mustve passed me on sheer pity. my papers were the kind that you had to share w/ other ppl when reading cuz you couldnt believe how ridiculous they were.
not only that but my transcript is so ugly. but somehow they still awarded me with a bachelor of arts degree from the university of california berkeley. that itself is worth $50/hr in private tutoring. i dont think many ppl realize the miraculousness of it all cept for my old roommates.
all of this always leads me to the next question "how am i going BACK to SCHOOL?"....wth am i doing? the scary thing is that im not just writing that, im REALLY thinking that. how the heck did i trick a grad school into thinking that they should admit me into their program?
too late and too tired to think about this. remember the default answer: all by the grace of God.

rafting on the kern river was fun. rafting on the kern river for free is even better. im glad i have some cool coworkers. really, really tired right now. but its the good "ive been doing lots of fun things and im being productive" tired, not the bad "ive been sitting on my butt all day doing nothing and wasted the whole day" tired.
